“Pandora’s Key in the Cryo-Wunderkammer” is the fractured object of a golden key frozen into a block of ice. Throughout the duration of the exhibit, the ice will melt and dismantle the parts. The key represents the key to Pandora’s box, a figure from Greek mythology that opened a box with the curses of humanity. The ice block represents the scientific discipline of ‘cryonics’, the practice of conserving cells by freezing them. However, the melting object states a dilemma of receiving the key for releasing the possibilities and/or curses of cryonics. The object is a self-destroying performance representing the challenges humanity must face with the release of highly ethical technologies.
The artwork was exhibited from 19.-22. April 2019 during the Earth Soundscape Week of the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou (China) in cooperation with the School of Cre-ative Media, City University of Hong Kong.
